SUMMARY:Heritage Ranger Walk - Blairfindy Castle
DESCRIPTION:“Glenlivet it has castles three\, Drumin\, Blairfindy and Deskie”. This guided walk will take us to the 16th century tower house of Blairfindy and begins outside the iconic Glenlivet Distillery. On the walk in we’ll enjoy stunning views over one of Scotalnd’s most famous glens. You’ll learn a bit about Glenlivet’s rich history and some whisky history too. \nBlairfindy Castle was completed in 1564 by John Gordon. In 1586 Blairfindy passed to the Earls of Huntly\, another branch of the family\, who used it as a hunting seat. A panel above the arched doorway bears the Gordon arms and this date. In its heyday Blairfindy was a fine example of a three storey L-plan tower house and even today shows a remarkable degree of preservation. \nResearch has shown that the castle was probably burned by troops after the Battle of Culloden in 1746\, and it was never repaired or occupied after this time. A project to stabilise Blairfindy Castle took place in 2019\, funded through the Tomintoul & Glenlivet Landscape Partnership\, a programme supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The castle is now open to visitors for the first time in decades and has been specially adapted to encourage nesting birds and pollinators. \nPlease park at the The Glenlivet Distillery car park. The walk will start from outside the stillhouse under the green signpost marked ‘Blairfindy Castle 1/2 mile’ (see last photo). \nAccess is by foot along a dedicated track. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for changeable weather. \nToilets are available inside The Glenlivet Distillery Visitor Centre. \nChildren are very welcome to attend. \nWell behaved dogs are welcome. \nWe would like to express thanks to Foundation Scotland\, who fund this event through the Dorenell Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.

SUMMARY:Heritage Ranger walk: Scalan Mills and Hidden Seminary
DESCRIPTION:Scalan was originally the site of a secret Roman Catholic seminary where priests were trained in the 1700s. Scalan played a vital role in preserving and nurturing the Catholic faith during a time of severe persecution in Scotland. \nFollowing the departure of the priests in 1799\, Scalan reverted to a farm. Two steading buildings were built housing corn threshing mills which served the Glenlivet farming community. The threshing machines and water wheels are still in place along with a wealth of historical graffiti telling the story of farming life in the 19th and 20th centuries. \nJoin members of the Scalan Association and TGDT on a guided tour of the site and the mill buildings. We’ll explore the seminary and mill buildings while unravelling the captivating stories written into the walls. \nIn addition to its historical allure\, the landscape surrounding Scalan is a haven for nature enthusiasts\, with an abundance of oystercatchers\, curlews\, and lapwings during the spring and summer months. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars along if you have them. \nWe will be meeting in the Carrachs car park before proceeding by foot along a farm track\, 1km from the car park at the end of the public road. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for changeable weather. \nChildren are very welcome to attend. \nToilet facilities are available on site during the summer season. \nWell behaved dogs are welcome in the mill buildings\, but are not permitted in the seminary. Please note that sheep and other livestock live on site. Please be aware that there may be cattle present on the walk in. \nHow to get to the Carrachs car park: \nTurn east off the B9008 at Auchnarrow (signposted for Scalan) and follow this road right to the end ensuring to follow sign for Chapeltown of Glenlivet. If you are using a navigation system\, the postcode AB37 9JS will take you most of the way to Chapeltown of Glenlivet. Drive past Braeval Distillery and at the road end follow the 90-degree right hand turn which leads to the car park. This track is quite potholed and uneven in places so please proceed slowly and carefully. \nFunded by Foundation Scotland from the Dorenell Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.

SUMMARY:Shooglenifty Concert - Findhorn
DESCRIPTION:Shooglenifty was formed in 1990 by musicians from the Scottish Highlands\, Orkney and Edinburgh. Its bright spark was the idea of fusing traditional and traditional-sounding melodies with the beats and bass-lines of a mixed bag of more contemporary influences. As happy playing a small highland village hall as they are on an outdoor festival stage playing to tens of thousands\, the Shoogles (as they’re known to their fans) have promoted Scottish music all over the world for three decades. In a career spanning many firsts – the first band to incite a stage invasion at the Sydney Opera House\, the first UK band to play in Cuba\, and the first Scots to perform in the Borneo Rainforest – Shooglenifty blazed a trail that many other top Scottish traditional bands have followed. But they are still the original and best. They will get you on your feet with their electric new tunes and a full-on set of old favourites. \nShooglenifty reached the ripe old age of 30 in 2020. Hopes that they would finally settle down to the quiet life were dashed when they accepted an invitation to start the year in style by performing at midnight for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. \nOn sparkling form and armed with a brand-new album of fresh tunes\, released during lockdown\, the Shoogles will entertain as only they can.

SUMMARY:Blackhills Garden Open Day
DESCRIPTION:An oasis of tranquility. \nHISTORY OF THE GARDEN\nBlackhills Garden is around 70 acres and\, for those interested in geography\, is situated between two interconnected glacially-eroded steep valleys. The first valley is a kettle hole and the other valley is known locally as “The Warren” because of its labyrinth of paths akin to a rabbit warren. Two ponds\, one a former curling pond known as ‘the old pond’ and a ‘new pond’\, make use of the abundant supply of spring water. \nThe physical geography provides a perfect\, sheltered micro-climate for some 360 species of rhododendron\, creating a dramatic backdrop for this unique\, Himalayan-inspired garden. \nPlease note that the garden is closed to the public\, and anyone wishing to arrange a visit must contact us in advance\, or they will be turned away. The gardens are private\, and to maintain the privacy of those staying in our holiday cottages and of family members\, we must manage access. Please remember that Blackhills Estate is a private home and working farm and that there is no public parking or facilities. We thank you for your understanding. \n

SUMMARY:Lossie Session - Concert
DESCRIPTION:We are super excited to be putting on the first Lossie Session in the wonderful Lossiemouth Town Hall as a fundraiser for Brother Sea who are representing Scotland at two major European Festivals this Spring and Summer. All profits from ticket sales and the bar will go towards their travel expenses. \nBrother Sea will be sharing the stage with two other talented Scottish artists\, Calum Ingram and local boy William Freeman… \nBROTHER SEA: \nBrother Sea’s music is that of departure into a wild adventure\, sweeping you away with a sense of a new beginning. With hypnotic vocals accompanied by a playful twist on classic folk instruments they create awe and intrigue with songs that are like campfire stories exploring heritage and folklore as they gently flicker through captivating soundscapes. \nCALUM INGRAM: \nCalum has played the cello from age nine and never looked back. He’s developed a unique approach to the cello inter-twin-ing his strings. \nIn 2013 Calum wrote and performed music for the off-Broadway Show Devision Avenue and won the award for Best Sound Design as part of The Midtown International Theatre Festival\, New York City. Later that year\, he released his debut album “Making It Possible.” \nIn 2015\, he headlined the acoustic main stage at The Wicker Man Festival in Scotland\, followed by the release of his “Turn Around” live EP. Shortly after his return\, he signed a publishing deal with 23rd Precinct/Nottinghill Music. \nIn 2017\, Calum was featured in the Sky Arts TV series\, Tony Visconti’s “Unsigned Heroes” which saw him performing a duet with Stewart Copeland (The Police) as part of Visconti’s 50 Years in Music celebratory concert. \nCalum’s debut album was nominated for Best Album and for the Kevin Thorpe Award at the British Blues Awards in 2014. \nWILLIAM FREEMAN: \nHailing from Lossiemouth and now living in Glasgow\, William Freeman’s soft guitar melodies mixed with meaningful lyrics provide easy listening songs that fit comfortably in the folk/acoustic genre.

SUMMARY:Bushcraft Basics - Logie Steading
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of bushcraft and have fun in nature. The perfect outdoor experience for the whole family! \nThere’ll be something for everyone whether old or young. This is a great activity to do as a family too as there will be plenty of teamwork needed! \nAlthough open to everyone\, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. \nWhat do I need? \n1. sensible footware (paths can be slippy) \n2. Waterbottle and snack \n3. Waterproofs (if needed) \n4. Binoculars and/or camera \n  \nWhat’s the plan? \nThe sessions will meet at Logie Steading by the main entrance before heading out into the beautiful estate grounds to explore the woodlands. The estate is diverse and wonderfully remote and we will be looking at a number of different habitats and locations. Although there will be a bit of foraging it’s a good idea to bring a snack and don’t forget to check the weather! \nLogie Steading has some wonderful shops and a cafe and so we will aim to finish back at the main buildings by around 12:30- giving you time to explore before lunch. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nWill’s background is as an animal biologist. He now works as a professional wildlife photographer and filmmaker around Scotland. His real passion\, however\, is teaching\, so he spends much of his time sharing the wonders of nature with kids and adults all over the country. His expertise in tracking and bushcraft have helped him get some beautiful images and video which have been published internationally. If you want to ask some photography questions while on this course then he will be happy to help.
