One of the most popular attractions for our international guests this year is the new Macallan distillery which is around 20-minutes away from Isla Bank House and is worth devoting most of a day to. It is one of the oldest and the newest of our distilleries giving you a unique snapshot of the world of Scotch Whisky.
Farmers were making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area since at least 800AD, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months and in 1824 Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher and rapidly built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies.
Summer 2019 saw the opening of their ambitious modern distillery building and new visitor experience which they say marries their whisky-making heritage with the innovative vision that sits at the heart of The Macallan and guides their future. It has taken six years to plan and build and I think you will agree that the building and grounds are quite striking. and very much of the 21st century.
